Accrington Stanley goalkeeper Alex Cisak could be faced with the prospect of flying half way around the world for as many as seven Olympic qualifiers during 2011/12 – meaning he may potentially miss a number of club games if he remains at the Crown Ground.
Cisak set his sights on a place in Australia’s under 23s team for the 2012 Olympics when he joined Stanley last summer and was keen to be involved in Australia’s opening qualifiers this week.
Injury, though, forced the 22-year-old’s withdrawal from the Olyroos’ squad for their double header against Yemen.
Australia won the first leg 3-0 yesterday, with former Stanley loan keeper Dean Bouzanis on the bench.
Australia now look set to progress to the Asian section’s group stage, which takes place during next season and could lead to a number of call-ups for Cisak if the national team decide to select their European-based players.
Group matches are scheduled for September 21, November 23 and 27, February 5 and 22 as well as March 14, with an extra play-off game at the end of March if required as well as a potential second play-off against an African nation – initially scheduled to take place in Coventry in April.
It is still to be confirmed whether Cisak will remain at Stanley this summer, with the keeper offered a new deal after impressing in the second half of the season.
Another club could prise Cisak away providing they are prepared to pay a fee for a player who is under the age of 24, under the terms of the Bosman ruling, although Reds boss John Coleman said last week he was one of a number of players he was starting to feel optimistic about retaining.
