Burnley chairman Barry Kilby insists new faces could still be on the way to Turf Moor despite the transfer window closing.

Although no deals were nailed before the transfer deadline, Clarets boss Steve Cotterill can still rely on emergency' loan signings until the end of November and pick up players not contracted to other clubs.

Cotterill twice dipped into the loan market last autumn, securing the services of Southampton midfielder Nathan Dyer and Derby goalkeeper Lee Grant.

Grant stepped in following Danny Coyne's long-term cruciate knee ligament injury and made one appearance while Brian Jensen served a suspension.

"We can still operate on the emeregency loan system," said Kilby.

"We have always got the option to bring somebody in on loan if Steve feels there is a need.

"We made a couple of loans signings last Autumn, such as Dyer from Southampton."

This season, Cotterill conducted all of his business before a ball was kicked, snapping up Alan Mahon, Andy Gray, Steve Jones and Steve Foster in the summer.

Kilby was not surprised to see Cotterill make no late purchase ahead of the deadline.

He added: "The thing is, we got organised early this season.

"Getting Andy Gray and Alan Mahon really early, and then Steve Foster later on but before the start of pre-season, it was not as frantic as it's previously been.

"We are always looking at players. Steve is well aware of the budget. He knows where he stands.

"But, as I've said before, if Steve recognises someone that will improve the squad, we will look at it.

"We would like our squad to be a bit bigger. But we had to take a decision on quantity or quality, with the budget that we have got. It's as simple as that.

"In terms of squad numbers, it's certainly more than we have had in the past.

"It's still small in comparison to most Championship clubs, but there is quality in the squad."
