It didn't make as many headlines as West Ham's capture of two Argentineans or Chelski finally persuading Arsenal to let Ashley Cole go.

It may even have escaped the attention of some Rovers fans.

However, a few days before the transfer deadline the club made a major signing which will reverberate with Rovers fans for the next three seasons.

Holland's Pies are now official suppliers of pastries to Ewood. I look forward to my winter half-times being cheered up by a chicken balti pie. A half-time lead would act as good sauce.

Perhaps it was the promise of delicious pies that persuaded our other recent signing Mr Shabani Nonda, recently used to the delights of Monaco and Rome, to move to Blackburn?

Here's a brain teaser for you. Would you exchange a Championship standard striker who is not a first team regular, for a player who not too long ago was top goal scorer in France and has changed hands for over £13 million?

Oh and by the way we'll throw in £2.5 million as a sweetener! In effect that is the deal that Mark Hughes has done.

Despite Nonda coming with something of a health warning because of his recent injury woes, it seems to me to be a gamble worth taking, particularly as he is on a one-season loan.

So good luck to Shefki Kuqi and Jonathan Douglas who have joined the ranks of ex-Rovers plying their trade in the Championship. As a result they will of course be mercilessly abused at the Turf. They will hopefully react by scoring the winner. (Thank you Jemal Johnson).

Surprisingly it was "as you were" as far as the Rovers' defence was concerned following deadline day.

It seems clear Lucas Neill would have moved to Liverpool had the price been right and Stephen Warnock added to the equation.

It's been said that Benitez wants to add steel to his defence. Another theory is that in wanting to sign Neill he is seeking to insure against steel being added to his other players legs!

It seems Andy Todd probably wanted to go but stays to fight for his place (please don't take that too literally Andy).

Signs of disunity in the defensive ranks is a concern and the sooner we can get Admiral Nelsen back to steady the ship the better.

Four points at least from our next two league games is the least we should be aiming for and everyone at Ewood needs to be fully focused on arresting our disappointing start.

Anyway back to pies. What do they call a pie on top of a clock in Burnley? Summat to Eight.
