As we revealed on Saturday, Blackburn Rovers are to make Australian defender Lucas Neill an improved contract offer in an attempt to keep him at the club.

Neill's current deal expires at the end of the season and he has already turned down one contract offer from Rovers.

Blackburn rejected a bid by Liverpool for the 28-year-old last week and will now try and persuade Neill to agree to a new deal otherwise the defender will be able to leave on a free transfer at the end of the season.

Blackburn chairman John Williams said: "It's still our intention that Lucas will sign a new contract and we will be presenting him with a new variation shortly.

"He did turn our first offer down before the World Cup but we will be offering him an improved version."
