BIDDING for a piece of Ewood Park turf, which reached almost £1million last week, closed tonight with a winning bid of £6,101.

The price dropped after eBay launched an investigation into a flurry of suspicious bids.

Eddie Maxwell was auctioning the penalty spot from Blackburn Rovers’ pitch where Wayne Rooney secured Manchester United’s record 19th Premier League title with a penalty.

The lot has been featured by media around the world after the story was first published in the Lancashire Telegraph.

The lot was viewed more than 175,000 times.

The Ewood Park pitch is being resurfaced this summer and Mr Maxwell was given permission to take the turf.

He is raising money for his Sunday league side King Edward FC, based in Guide.

He said: “The money is fantastic and will really keep my team going.

"I have thoroughly enjoyed the past week and the whole story that the auction has created.

“I never believed that there would be so much interest but it has been absolutely amazing.”

He vowed to hand the majority of the cash back to his beloved Rovers to use in their charity work if he ‘made a fortune’.
