PRO Luke Woodcock starred with the bat as Nelson dumped Lowerhouse of the Worsley Cup to set up a semi-final battle with his old club Church next month.
The Liverpool Road quarter-final loss was Lancashire League leaders Lowerhouse’s first since the opening day of the season – and Woodcock was inspirational with a fine innings to see Tom Lord’s men over the line and into that mouthwatering last-four clash.
Batting first, Lowerhouse collapsed from 32-0 to 43-5 as Neil Thompson (3-15) and Richard Meade (2-15) wreaked havoc until captain Charlie Cottam and 18-year-old Fergus Bailey rallied.
They shared an 83-run stand for the sixth with before Cottam went for 44 and Bailey eventually fell for 50 – but their efforts helped the House up to 169-8 from their 50 overs Peter Dibb, looking good since his move from Ribblesdale League champions, made 18 and Stuart Lemon 27 in a 53-run opening stand for Nelson – but three quick wickets left them on 54-3 and rocking.
However Woodock played a classy innings, hitting 68 not out to see off the rapid threat of Lowerhouse paid man Francois Haasbroek (4-21) as Nelson got home with nine balls and four wickets to spare.
Church’s passage to the semi-finals was via an epic at Haslingden as they got home by just one wicket.
Phill Hayes had top scored with 77 as Haslingden racked up 222-9 at Bentgate with Mo Imtiaz (37) and Graham Knowles (26) also contributing well.
In reply, Church appeared to be coasting at 120-2. But the departure of Saeed Anwar for 44 and Mohammed Jamil for 48 led to a nervy finish.
In the end last man Sam Tucker joined Adam Greenwood at the crease with five runs needed – and they eeked out the win.
Todmorden beat a massively understrength Rishton by 3pm in a game that marked the return to the middle of umpire Clifford Ashworth after he was hit in the face 10 days ago.
With the majority of the Rishton team at the wedding of skipper Jimmy Bibby, third team captain Steve Juliff led the side and batting first at Centre Vale and they were hustled out for just 36.
Professional Qaiser Abbas (3-2), Steve Barker (2-9), Lee Pearson (2-13), Paul Senior (1-2) and James Morgan (1-10) did the damage to Rishton’s much weakened side in just 24.5 overs before Todmorden dashed home in six overs.
They will play Ramsbottom in a repeat of the 2009 final after Jon Fielding’s men beat Enfield by 17 runs at Acre Bottom.
Shanan Stewart hit 76 and David Bell made 60 as Rammy posted 227-5 from their 50 overs.
Enfield were in determined mood but their reply was badly hampered by Simon Read, who claimed 7-31 to put Enfield’s dreams of a win to an end.
