Having organised the inaugural Fylde Road Race on behalf of the League of Veteran Racing Cyclists (LVRC), the North Lancashire Road Club then supplied two of the main prizewinners from the 75 entries.

Peter Briscoe, of Great Harwood, was winner of the ‘D’ category for 55-59 year olds, and Kevin Ainsworth of Darwen was third in his ‘C’ category for the 50-54 age group after a wet 54 miles.

This Sunday the same event organiser, Dave Hargreaves, teams up with Mal Gill of the same club to promote the Bashall Road Race for the LVRC where there are over 100 veteran riders on the programme.

This event, which includes several ex-international riders, is a counter towards the season-long Percy Stallard Series in memory of the main instigator of massed start racing on British roads in the 1940s.

The start time is at 10am from half a mile east of Higher Hodder Bridge, with the under 60’s completing five laps of the 11-mile circuit based on Bashall and Chaigley and the over 60‘s able to stop after four laps. Headquarters are at Edisford School, Clitheroe, whose headmaster Robert Pye is competing in the event.

Our local racing cyclists have produced several other good results over the past week with Ian Stott of Blackburn and District CTC taking third in the Oldham Century hilly time trial and ditto in the Border City Wheelers SPOCO, where he had to give best to Burnley’s Jimmy Wright who was 18 seconds faster over the 24 miles to clinch second slot.

In the Preston Wheelers ‘25’ at Garstang – won by Derek Parkinson of the Cleveleys Road Club in an excellent 52 minutes 53 seconds – Julian Markham of Mellor Brook was fourth best with 57-11 and Blackburn’s Sue Cheetham missed taking the award for fastest lady by just one second with her 1-10-34 beaten by the 1-10-33 of Theresa Taylor of Preston CC.

In the weekly events on East Lancahire roads, Paul Warrener again took his own Rossendale Road Club ‘10’ at Hapton in 26m 30s in high winds that also slowed Jason Craven 2nd (27-03), Adrian Watts 3rd (28-02) and Peter Nuttall 4th (29-33).

Carl Helliwell of Blackburn CTC was winner of the Edisford-based ‘10’ in 24-18 beating Richard Sagar (24-55), the tandem of James Prossor and Gill Craske (24-58) and Paul Taylor (25-11) from 28 entrants.

Pendle Forest had their own Ian Duckworth fastest in the 10 mile at Thornton-in-Craven with 25-44 beating Martin Brass (26-12) and Martin Welsh (26-41).
