GEORGE IV stormed to victory to lift the Moorehouses Division One Cup with a simply greight display of free, flowing attacking football.
Four goals in each half underlined their dominance at the Arbories against a battling Thornton Arms side who just couldn’t handle them.
Thornton had there chances to have a say in the final but crucially missed a penalty when trailing just 2-1.
In hindsight, it may not have had too much of an impact on the outcome but it certainly would have given George something to think about.
But in the end, it was all too easy as Michael Morrison, Cameron McGovern and Danny Green each scored twice with further goals from John Harrison and Wayne Morrison.
Having bossed the early encounters, George set the tone with a cleverly crafted opening goal in a cross field build-up involving five players – ending with Luke Thompson whipping in a cross that Michael Morrison met with a fine diving header.
But when Thornton levelled soon after – skipper Dave Harries converting an Alex Grice corner at the far post – it appeared to be game on.
Wayne Morrison nearly restored George’s advantage but, after some clever play to work an opening, he blasted in to the side netting.
The second arrived soon after. The exceptional John Harrison, who sprayed passes around all day, found the overlapping McGovern.
His centre was only partially cleared to Green who beat Dan Oates in the Thornton goal with a sweet dipping volley. Then came Thornton’s big chance.
Grice played in Dave Jagger who was brought down by George keeper Damien Ellison. But Ellison made amends when he beat away Matt Jagger spot kick.
George added injury to insult with two quick goals before the half time break – Harrison cracking a wonderful 25 yard effort in-off the crossbar before Green grabbed his second after Marc Schofield had flicked on a Michael Morrison cross.
There was to be no way back for Thornton now.
McGovern tapped in at the far post after skipper Morrison had dummied Green’s cross before Morrison himself got his second.
Thornton did have chances, Matthew Duthoit heading over and sub Gary Hall fired wide after racing on to Matt Jagger’s through ball.
And they pulled one back when Dave Jagger rose to head home a cross from Grice.
But George responded with more goals.
McGovern added his second with a nice finish before Wayne Morrison – who was desperate to get on to the score sheet – finally did so with the last kick, shooting across Oates to complete the rout.
