BLACKBURN Rovers defender Phil Jones has been named in the England under 21 squad for next month's European Championship in Denmark.

The 19-year-old defender is expected to play a key role in the tournament, having helped Stuart Pearce's men qualify.

Former Rovers goalkeeper Frank Fielding has also been named in the squad but Burnley's Jay Rodriguez has missed out on selection.

Chelsea midfielder and Clarets target Jack Cork will also travel in the 23 man squad.

Pearce has left out Arsenal's Jack Wilshere and Liverpool's Andy Carroll due to fitness concerns.

Pearce said: "I am very conscious of the importance of looking after all our players, and that is why I have frequent conversations with club managers throughout the season.

"I believe that representing your country in international development tournaments can be a great advantage to players, and increases the chances of being successful at senior level."

England's campaign starts against Spain on 12 June, but they face Norway in a friendly on 5 June.
