KEVIN Gallacher believes Blackburn Rovers showed they wanted survival more than Wolves on a dramatic last day of the season.

Rovers won 3-2 at Molineux after leading 3-0 at half time, although both sides avoided relegation in any case as results elsewhere went in Wolves’ favour.

“Blackburn went out and showed they wanted it the most and they did it in style,” said Gallacher, the former Rovers striker who was at Molineux working as a radio pundit.

“They were dominant in the first half but Wolves changed their system and tested Rovers to the limit in the second half.

“It is a relief for Rovers and it was a fantastic day. Five teams fighting relegation on the last day, lots of ups and downs and lots of changes.

“It was a great result for Rovers and the last three or four games have been fantastic.

“And if they can play like that consistently, there’s something good to look forward to next year. If they can get good additions hopefully they won’t be in the same position this time next year.

“They’ve got to learn from it. It’s all brushed away and it’s starting afresh now.”

Jason Wilcox, a member of the Rovers team that won the Premier League title in 1995, said: “I predicted in midweek that Rovers would stay up and I’m so glad I’m right!

“Fair play to Wolves, they came back at us in the second-half, but Rovers thoroughly deserved to win.

“It was a bit nerve-wracking at the end, but Rovers have shown that they are mentally tough. It’s massive for us that we’ve avoided relegation.

Wilcox added: “There’s been an awful lot said about Blackburn this season, in terms of criticism of the owners, and I hope we can now look forward and not back.”

Rovers record goal-scorer Simon Garner said he was delighted Rovers managed to survive the drop – but always thought they would win at Wolves.

“It was a great, battling performance from Rovers, especially in the first half,” said Garner.

“I always had a feeling they would win the match and I am delighted to see they have avoided relegation.

“But I am sad to see Blackpool go down. They lit up the Premier League and they did so until the very last game.”
