CAPTAIN Glen Chapple became only the fifth man in Lancashire history to make 7,000 runs and claim 700 wickets in First Class cricket as the Red Rose took a stranglehold against the White Rose of Yorkshire yesterday.

Earby’s Chapple reached the milestone on his way to 18 as Day Two of the Championship match went the way of his side.

Earlier opener Paul Horton made his highest score for 13 months with 93 off 199 balls as Lancashire ensured the home side were eyeing their fourth win from five matches after skittling Yorkshire on Wednesday.

Mark Chilton contributed a patient 77 off 174 balls, adding 90 with Steven Croft for the fourth wicket.

Yorkshire’s best spell of the day came just after tea when part-time off-spinner Joe Root took two of three wickets to fall for the addition of four runs as the hosts slipped from 240-3 to 244-6.

Lancashire closed on 327-8 from 113 overs.

Luke Procter (23 not out) and James Anderson (four not out) will look to add to their lead of 186 this morning.

Horton, 28, spent his winter playing first-class cricket in Zimbabwe, notching a career-best 209. But his county form has been sketchy for the last two summers prior to this.

Dropped on 73 by wicketkeeper Simon Guy – who has been recalled after spending two years in club cricket – off Adil Rashid, Horton helped to build on Lancashire’s overnight score of 56-1 in easier batting conditions than the first day when Yorkshire collapsed.

Play continues at 11am today.
