BRETT Emerton admits “everything is on the line” at Molineux on Sunday as Rovers look to ensure they don’t waste their exciting potential.

Blackburn Rovers’ longest-serving player insists he is confident they will secure safety in a tense Premier League finale but fears the worst-case scenario could lead to a squad break up.

Emerton insists with the likes of Phil Jones, Martin Olsson and Junior Hoilett exploding onto the scene from the academy and, with Venky’s set to financially back boss Steve Kean this summer, Rovers’ top flight future is bright.

But, travelling to Wolves on Sunday still needing a win to make sure of their Premier League status, the Australian international knows they are playing for high stakes at Molineux.

He said: “That is what we are in danger of should the worst happen. I think it is exciting times at the club at the moment. There is the possibility of money coming in and we have some very exciting young players who are just getting better week in and week out.

“It is exciting times and let us make sure we stay in the Premier League so we can build something special. If the worst was to happen, you suddenly come under massive pressure from clubs for our exciting young players. We want to keep them here and I want to play with these players.

“Survival means everything. It is the best league in the world. As a player and as supporters of this football club you want to be playing against the best players and teams in the world.

“I don’t think it is about the money. It is about pride as a player as well because no one wants to be associated with a team that has been relegated.

“Everything is on the line and as players we will do our best to make sure that doesn’t happen.”

Rovers travel to the Midlands on Sunday in the best position of all five teams still threatened by the drop and knowing a win at Wolves would guarantee their survival.

Even a defeat would leave two of Blackpool, Wigan and Birmingham needing to win at Old Trafford, Stoke and Tottenham respectively, with Emerton adamant they will finish the job themselves.

Emerton started his Rovers career with a 5-1 win over Wolves and a debut goal and, some eight seasons and more than 200 Premier League appearances later, he is desperate for more of the same.

He said: “It is all in our own hands. I am still positive we will keep ourselves safe and be in the Premier League next season.

“It has been a sensational season all round. It has been a very interesting one for all the supporters and there are still so many teams in that relegation battle.

“It has been a great season for the Premier League and it is just unfortunate that we are still in it on the last day. I still feel confident and believe we have enough.

“I have had good results in recent years against Wolves, maybe it is a lucky ground. Hopefully it is third time lucky.

"In the last two games we have been 20 minutes away from safety.

"It hasn’t been but we will get the job done next week.

“We all know what is at stake for the club and for ourselves as well.

"We will prepare all week in the right way and make sure we go there in the right mood next week.

“Relegation is not unthinkable. It has been shown in the past no club is too big or too good to go down.

"All we can do is approach next week’s game in the right way.”
