BLACKBURN Rovers boss Mark Hughes is looking to strengthen his squad before tomorrow's transfer deadline.

Despite making five signings already this summer, Hughes is still in the market for new players as he gears up for what he hopes will be a lengthy UEFA Cup campaign.

However, the Rovers chief is adamant he won't bring someone into the club just for the sake of it, insisting any last-minute signings must be good enough to go straight into his starting eleven.

Rovers chairman John Williams, who met with Hughes yesterday to discuss a list of potential targets, said: "We've got a long list of players who we think are gettable, but Mark is of the opinion that many of them won't improve the quality of the team.

"We've got 25 or 26 senior professionals at the club so we think the volume of the squad is right as it is.

"We therefore don't want to bring people in who are going to be squad players. If we sign someone, they've got to be capable of going straight into the first team.

"There's still deals to be done if we want to do them, and Mark knows that we'll back him if he identifies a player that he thinks will improve the team."

Aside from any potential incoming transfer activity, there may also be one or two outgoings, too, with several fringe players in Hughes' squad attracting interest from elsewhere.

"We discussed a number of expressions of interest in our players at yesterday's meeting," said Williams.

"If Mark feels there are certain deals he can do that won't affect the strength or quality of the squad then he might look at them.

"But we've resisted bids for our players all summer and that's the stance we're continuing to take at this moment."

One player attracting particular interest is Shefki Kuqi, with a number of clubs in the Championship making firm enquiries for the Finnish international, all of which have been resisted so far.

"There has been interest in Shefki, we can't deny that, but we've told the clubs we don't want to sell him," added Williams.
