BLACKBURN coach John Morgan has taken charge of his last ever home game but admits he has loved every second.
Morgan steps down at the end of the current campaign after a season-and-a-half in charge of the Ramsgreave Drive club.
The popular Welshman took over the reigns midway through last season after Dave Mackal resigned.
And although Morgan, a teacher at QEGS, could not prevent Blackburn from relegation, he has got the players enjoying their rugby again.
“It may sound a bit odd but getting relegated was probably the best thing to happen to this group of players,” said Morgan. “The club had gone through two very bad seasons and con-fidence was very low.
“But this season, we have done a lot better and we are winning matches which is always a big morale booster.
“I haven’t come in and done anything different in particular. It is the players themselves who have made the changes. They are just enjoying playing again.”
Morgan had originally planned to stay in charge until the end of last season but was persuaded to give it one more campaign.
And while he has no qualms about stepping down, he says he has enjoyed his time in the Blackburn hot seat.
He said: “I have loved every second of it. They are a great bunch of players and everyone involved in the club has been very supportive.
“Everyone knows I was going to step down at the end of this season and despite really enjoying it, it never crossed my mind to stay on.”
Morgan, who has missed several games this season to watch his sons play rugby, wants to spend more time with his family.
“It wasn’t just about Saturday afternoons, it was also training sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I have always said family comes first and that is the reason why I missed games this season to watch my boys play.”
Unfortunately, Morgan could not sign off with a win as Blackburn lost 14-5 to Fleetwood.
But he will not be severing ties completely as QEGS have links with club while player/coach Dino Radice also works at the school.
“I’ll always come down and watch the boys,” He added. “They won’t be able to keep me away.”
