Blackburn Rovers press officer Paul Agnew hopes to aid communication between owners and fans after travelling to India for a meeting with Venky’s.

Agnew has been invited to Pune by Venky’s chairperson Anuradha Desai and is due to return tomorrow after holding discussions with Rovers’ new owners.

The 53-year-old had recently been linked with the vacant chairman’s job at Rovers but says he has had no indication that he is under consideration for that position and expects the meeting to be about helping to unite club and fans in his role as press officer.

Rovers manager Steve Kean travels to Pune once a month to meet the owners and Agnew had initially been scheduled to fly to India last week, but the meeting was put back because of the owners’ other commitments.

“It’s just basically an invitation to go over and meet with them and chat about a few things,” said Agnew, who has been in charge of Rovers’ press operation for 14 years.

“I’ve championed the cause for making sure the communications are bob on because I think that is critical - internal communication at Ewood, communication between the owners and Ewood, communication with the fans.

“I’m just keen that we get the messages across. There has been a lot of uncertainty, because perhaps the messages haven’t been properly understood.

“I feel very privileged to have the opportunity go over there and meet them face to face, and try to bring that a full understanding of what their vision for the club is.

“I think it’s important there is this contact.”

Rovers have been looking for a new chairman since the departure of John Williams in February but Venkatesh Rao insisted the club’s owners were no closer to an appointment after reports linked Agnew with the post.

“I’m in the dark over where that came from,” said Agnew, a lifelong Rovers fan.

“It seemed to come from a number of different sources but nothing has ever been mentioned directly to me.

“But if there is to be a restructuring of the club or whatever, I’m willing to discuss any role they may have in mind.

“Anything that is in the best interests of Blackburn Rovers I will do.”
