AS the 2011 Cricket season begins to burst into life, a new book charts the history of a Lancashire League side – and tells the story of how that club has an impact on the town.

In A League Of Their Own charts Todmorden Cricket Club through the 20th century and is published by Freda, Malcolm and Brian Heywood.

The book, which runs to almost 400 pages and features some marvellous pictures, is a must, not just for cricket fans but also anyone who holds even a passing interest in local history.

Part I covers the story of Todmorden CC from 1897 to 1938, ending with the league final play-off against Haslingden. It reflects the highlights, ambitions and rivalries within the Lancashire League and is set against the background of social and economic change; World War I, the impact of Learie Constantine, the depression of the 1930s and the emergence of women’s cricket.

Part II explores the local District Cricket League and the development of football and rugby in the town as well as other sports such as knur and spell, pigeon shooting, cycling, swimming and the rifle club.

The growth of music and drama, from churches, chapels and the Co-op, is also described.

Part III continues the cricket story from 1939 to 2000 and, as much of this is based on the authors’ experiences, there are many stories and anecdotes. Issues which have affected the league: Sunday cricket and changes in playing format.

A final chapter paints the current leisure scene, describing the many activities available for both young and old and confirming that cricket and music are still vital elements in the life of the town.

It is a great read, a read that takes you back through the decades of wonderful memories...and an ideal buy. It is available from local bookshops and Todmorden Information Centre for £10 hardback and £5 paperback.
