OKAY, so a 3-1 defeat away from home is not that great but by my reckoning that’s 8-7 on aggregate to the Stanley versus Gillingham this year and that’s not too shabby.
What a week it’s been for Phil Edwards. His two magnificent penalties on Tuesday night helped the Reds to a well deserved 3-0 win over Blue Square Premier bound Stockport, then on Saturday he most uncharacteristically failed to hit the net from the spot and we left the south empty handed.
Phil is something of a legend at Stanley and this season he has been in fantastic form at both ends of the pitch.
His tackles at the back have been just as important as his goals at the other end.
If we are to reach the play-offs we need to ensure that the team respond to Saturday’s defeat in a positive way tonight against Burton.
We must guard against complacency, with the Brewers languishing third from bottom of the league it would be easy to think all we need to do is turn up to get the three points.
As with us the table is a tad false in the case of Burton as they have only played 31 games this season. And while they have not had a great year, I do not think they will be one of the teams that go down.
Things could be looking very bright indeed by the time Saturday rolls around and Port Vale visit the Crown Ground.
If results go for us tonight we could climb the table to 10th, and how I would love to get one over on the Vale after our cup run ended with a whimper at their ground in November.
Vale and Burton are two teams we are more than capable of beating and if we are to be considered real contenders for a top seven finish, then we need to do just that.
