Tottenham’s spectacular win over AC Milan in Italy last night will not be remembered for Peter Crouch’s goal, nor some of the feisty tackles on show.

No the game in the Champions League, which is designed for the champions of leagues around Europe plus a few others who are not champions, will be remembered for the astonishing clash between Milan captain Gennaro Gattuso and Spurs assistant boss Joe Jordan.

Ex-Rangers man Gattuso tussled with Jordan during the game - and then bizarrely had another go at the Scot at the end when he appeared he head butt the former AC striker.

It was madness - and proves that despite playing in Glasgow, Gattuso has obviously never visited mining villages in North Lanarkshire otherwise he would never have tried to fight a Scotsman who would enter such a battle as 1/10,000 favourite.

And it will also prove to be a real test of the resolve of UEFA, who have the chance to prove they have a spine somewhat more sturdy than that of a jellyfish.

Gattuso must be banned; you simply cannot have players attacking coaching staff.

UEFA chiefs should take the ultimate sanction against Gattuso, maybe ban him for life rather than the normal three or four-game ban and tiny fine.

But is also raises another point. What on earth is the technical area for?

Aside from letting managers and their minions prove to the fans how much they care, I can’t see a reason for that whitewashed box near the dugouts.

Managers and staff should not be allowed so close to the pitch. They only use it for show. They never needed a technical area in the past.

Managers and their supporters say it is important for them to get their message through to the players. I wonder if players actually listen to messages being put across.

I am in no way condoning Gattuso’s actions, as funny as they were. But I can’t believe that Jordan’s words to him during the game were asking the Italian out for a glass of something red after the match.

It was silly - and maybe it’s time to make the bosses and their buddies sit in their box.
