PAUL Robinson admits this looks like being the tightest Premier League season ever but believes Blackburn Rovers are well placed to take full advantage.

The Rovers goalkeeper insists the club have to be happy with their current points tally of 31 and believes matching last campaign’s top half finish would represent an achievement.

Newcastle arrive at Ewood Park this afternoon level on points with Rovers, with Robinson stressing the importance of hitting the 40-point mark as soon as possible.

He said: “It is so close, last year was close and this season it is even closer.

“As the years go on, it is getting closer.

“You used to have the four or five teams who would break away at the top and the four or five break away teams in the middle. The rest would then have their own league in the middle but it is not like that any more.

“It is not ridiculous to say that a couple of wins could put us in a European spot but the other way if we get a couple of defeats we could get sucked in at the wrong end.

“I think we have had a very good season so far.

“Looking at our points total, three more wins would take us over the 40-point mark and I think you will need that to stay up.

“But if you had given us this points tally at this stage of the season, with a couple of good fixtures coming up, then we would have taken it.”
