CLITHEROE slumped to their fourth home league defeat of the season after a late flurry of goals at Shawbridge.
Fourth-placed Blues were looking to close the gap on the leading pack and started brightly but failed to convert any chances in the first half.
It was a similar pattern in the second half until Danny South drilled home from 25 yards to give the visitors the lead on the hour.
And Wakefield doubled their lead 12 minutes from time through Brandon Kane.
Tom Williams gave Clitheroe a glimmer of hope with a goal from close range in the 85th minute. But Wakefield secured victory in added on time through Wayne Shooter. Jack Higgins then scored from the spot with the last kick of the game.
