STEVE Kean has called for more aggression from his Blackburn Rovers side after admitting ‘we were too open’ at the DW Stadium.

The Rovers boss was disappointed with his side’s overall defensive display in their thrilling 4-3 defeat to Wigan – claiming the main problem was in the middle third.

Rovers have now conceded more goals away from home than any other Premier League side this season and Kean knows it can’t continue.

He said: “We are disappointed because after we scored the first goal I thought we had the chances to get a second.

“But I felt we were a little bit open and there was a change over in possession.

"I felt we should have been a little more aggressive to try and stop the counter attacks of Wigan.

“I would not say it is just the back four and the goalkeeper, far from it.

"I think everyone in the team needs to be more aggressive in trying to stop and trying to minimise the counter attacks when we are going forward.

“We were probably too easy to break down and that is something we will be looking at.

"The amount of bodies that we are opening up to create a chance, maybe we need to think about anchoring off and stopping play quickly after we have an attack.

“When we lose possession we have to be more aggressive and more demanding to minimise the amount of counter attacks.”

Jason Roberts’ early opener was cancelled out by James McCarthy but it was Rovers who dominated for the majority of the first half.

Goals from Hugo Rodallega and McCarthy soon after the break quickly changed the shape of the game and Rovers were never able to recover.

“Rodallega’s goal was disappointing because he ended up getting in between the two centre backs,” said Kean.

“He has taken it well but for a single striker to get between the two centre backs is disappointing.”

Rovers were left ruing a number of missed first half chances as they failed to convert their first half dominance into a lead.

Kean said: “The intensity was good and we had a lot of good goal scoring opportunities.

"I didn’t feel at all worried when we went ahead and I think we could have scored another one or two goals in that period.

"Sometimes when you don’t then obviously there is going to be reaction from the other team and they reacted well.

“It was always going to be about whoever makes the least amount of mistakes in their own box on that surface.

“I thought we deserved a point. We gave away some sloppy goals but we did enough to deserve a point.

"I thought we deserved a point against Spurs as well.

"We are doing something right but the bit we have to work on is the middle part of the pitch.”
