REVENGE is a hard word, often used in a context of strong feelings towards the opposition.
I must admit that until I heard the words of the Cheltenham manager Mark Yates after the game on Saturday, I had no feelings one way or the other for the Gloucestershire club.
They beat us at home back in October when we were on the crest of a slump. Our form was poor and they took advantage.
Fast forward to the final whistle on Saturday and Yates could not bring himself to say his promotion-chasing team were beaten by a better set of players. This often happens with Stanley.
Opposition managers simply cannot bring themselves to admit they have been outplayed by a smaller club.
Yates said that it was a bobbly pitch, there was a lucky deflection for one of our goals and that Stanley had made it a “bitty” game.
John Coleman has masterminded a fantastic turnaround since the start of the New Year and in Terry Gornell he appears to have unearthed another gem of a striker.
Ten points from our four games in January has seen us climb up into the top half of the table and, more importantly, we have witnessed the return of the air of invincibility that was present for the first few games of the season.
We will not win all our games from now until the end of the season and for me 50 points is still my first aim – but with teams above us still underestimating the Reds, anything is possible.
Tonight we take on Shrewsbury. Can we remain unbeaten in January? Yes, I think so.
The club has organised an open forum tomorrow at 6pm in the clubhouse.
I hope that it will be well attended and that the club has some positive new ideas to share with us.
