THE weather is fast becoming a real pain in the posterior this winter.
The snow forced the Burton game to be postponed on Saturday and with worse weather forecast I can’t help wondering when we will next get a chance to watch the Reds at home.
This year’s Boxing Day fixture has a special place in the hearts of many Stanley fans, all because of a certain FA Cup match at Ewood Park on December 5, 1992.
Back then the thought of playing against Crewe in the Football League was a pipe dream only allowed after several pints in the bar after a win against Shepshed, Barrow, Frickley or the like.
How times change.
Last season after the match I gave John Coleman a big kiss on the way out and shouted: “I love you!”
When your team hits the right note, as we did on that Friday against Crewe, all your worries in the real world melt away.
For 90 minutes you are transported to a second life where your strikers lob the opposition keeper from 50 yards and every one-on-one attack results in the ball in the back of the net.
At 5-1 up the Ultras in the Clayton End chanted, ‘We want six’. This was not a disrespectful song aimed at our visitors.
No, it was pure joy expressed in words at how far we had come in the 16 years that had elapsed since that 6-1 defeat in the cup.
I hope the game is on and I am sure they will bring a large number of fans to this festive fixture.
The banter between both sets of followers will be FANtastic, then win, lose or draw all will be in the clubhouse after for a friendly pint and a chat.
Perfect!
