A DOUBLE substitution inspired Burnley to end a run of four league games without a win.

The Clarets trailed Watford 2-1 when Ross Wallace and Steven Thompson were brought off the bench.

Wallace had been on the pitch for only four minutes when he fired in the equaliser with 20 minutes to go. Then the winger supplied the cross from which Jay Rodriguez earned the decisive penalty, and Graham Alexander stepped up to score.

Burnley took the lead through top scorer Chris Iwelumo midway through the first half.

The ball didn't touch the ground after leaving goalkeeper Lee Grant's boot in the build-up. Rodriguez headed on and Iwelumo headed past Scott Loach for his ninth of the season – all at Turf Moor.

But Watford were level five minutes later when former Hornets defender Clarke Carlisle mis-judged bouncing ball and Don Cowie sprinted clear to slide in a shot across Lee Grant.

Cowie turned provider in the 57th minute when his corner was headed in by former Blackburn and Birmingham defender Martin Taylor.

But Wallace and Thompson made a huge difference to the Clarets when they replaced Wade Elliott and Iwelumo on 66 minutes, and Wallace quickly levelled with his second of the season as he volleyed home Chris Eagles' right wing cross.

Wallace was a menace down the left, his cross found Rodriguez on the edge of the box, and when the striker went down after being pushed in the back by Taylor, referee Christopher Sarginson took a long look before pointing to the spot.

Alexander scored his third of the season – all from the spot – in off the underside of the bar to clinch it for the Clarets.
