BURNLEY coach Getty Schinkel hailed Satur-day’s victory at league leaders Trafford as one of the best under his leadership but has told his players they will now be marked men.
Burnley inflicted the first home defeat on Trafford - and only their second of the campaign - with a performance as near to perfect as Schinkel would admit.
“If I was to pick holes in our game I would say we let them off the hook a little because the final score was closer than it should have been,” said the South African.
“But that was a perfect display and the result of two years of hard work on the pitch and in training.
“Everything we have worked on came together and I think winning a game of this importance and doing it the way we did, will finally give the lads the belief that they are talent-ed players.”
However Schinkel said Burnley will now be one of the prize scalps in the North Lancashire One Lea-gue as their third straight win took them up to third place.
“That is a different prob-lem for us to cope with but a nice problem.
“I don’t want to be in this league and the players don’t want to be in this league either.
“They now know they will be one of the teams to beat so it will be all about our attitude.”
Schinkel admitted he was delighted to see his side beat Traf-ford at their own game, running at angles their hosts simply could not cope with. Gerhard Botha had one of his most influe-ntial games in a Burnley shirt as he moved from his regular number nine slot to play in midfield.
The South African orchestrated most of Burnley’s play and crossed for one of three tries scored by the Holden Road side. Young flanker Jack Stockdale and captain Nino Angelone both scored tries while Richard Grif-fiths kicked a penalty and conversion.
Schinkel added: “That is up there with some of our best wins.
“A couple of years ago we were beating Trafford on a regular basis but you have to remember we have rebuilt this side with some very young players.”
