BLACKBURN Rovers starlet Frank Fielding has declared ‘this is the biggest night of our careers’ as he and team-mate Phil Jones look to fire England under 21s into next year’s European Championships.
The home-grown duo have come through Rovers’ youth ranks to become some of the country’s hottest prospects, and Fielding insists tonight’s play-off first leg against Romania is their biggest challenge yet as they continue their footballing education.
Fielding will be hoping to get the nod over Watford stopper Scott Loach for a start at Carrow Road this evening and, with fellow Ewood favourite Jones also set to start, the 22-year-old is predicting a proud night individually and for Rovers as a collective.
While Jones has already established himself as a Premier League regular since breaking into Rovers’ first team towards the end of last season, Fielding knows he still has it all to prove but he is confident he is in the right place to do just that.
The 22-year-old, said: “It is the biggest two games we will have for a long time. This is a chance to help our country, England, qualify for the European Championships. I am really looking forward to the games.
“These will be the two biggest games I have ever played, Phil as well I expect, and I hope I get to play. Games like this will stick with you. There will be huge pressure and it is moments like these you have to prove you can pass the test.
“Of course it a proud moment for us but this is about a result and winning a game. I want to play at the highest level I can. I wouldn’t be here talking to you now, or learning my trade at Blackburn Rovers if I didn’t think I could do it.
“I try every day. I will stay patient, keep developing and will always work to be the best I can be.”
The former Queen Elizabeth Grammar School student in Blackburn is still reeling from the experience of making England’s senior squad in August, after an injury crisis saw him mixing with the game’s elite.
He said: “It was an amazing experience to be selected for the England squad earlier in the season. Being in the same squad as people like John Terry was just incredible. Of course it makes you even more hungry.
“It is a bit annoying I am not playing but I have to look at it the other side and that I am using the time to develop as a goalkeeper and working with Bobby Mimms and making the most of being at such a fantastic club as Blackburn Rovers.
“I learn from Paul Robinson every day. Not just on the pitch but off the pitch as well. He has played at every level.
“He is definitely still one of the best in the country and I don’t think he gets as much credit as he deserves some times. I can ask him anything and he will give me an answer so it depends on me really.”
