JUNIOR Hoilett is looking to gain inspiration from ‘seaside saviour’ Brett Emerton after insisting it only takes a second to achieve a dramatic shift in personal fortunes.
Blackburn Rovers’ Canadian starlet Junior Hoilett has suffered a highly frustrating start to the campaign as he is made to wait for his first Premier League start but remains defiant he can make a dramatic impact.
Australian midfielder Brett Emerton, also without a league start this campaign, took full advantage of a second half cameo at Blackpool on Saturday by firing home the last-gasp winner – his first league goal for two years.
Hoilett, who was left cheering the strike from the substitutes bench, is now looking to follow in Emerton’s footsteps as he bids to make his mark on Rovers’ Premier League season.
He said: “Of course you look at what Brett did on Saturday and it gives all of us who aren’t playing at the moment that bit of inspiration. It shows you how things can change for you quickly.
“It shows you can make an impact as a substitute and give yourself a chance of getting into the first team. That is what all of us are aiming for.
“I am going to keep on top of my game and keep pushing, like everyone is, and I will keep trying to put pressure on the other players. That is all I can do.
“I will keep working hard in training and keep working hard in games and when I get my chance I need to take it.”
Hoilett, 20, burst onto the first team scene at the start of last season after Rovers won a lengthy battle for a work permit to allow him to play in England.
He made eight starts and a further 15 substitute appearances but has struggled to kick on this season with just one appearance from the bench to his name.
Hoilett though, who impressed in the reserves’ 2-2 draw with Manchester United on Monday night, is likely to be part of Rovers’ squad for Saturday’s trip to Stoke and will do everything he can to make he is in a position to ‘seize the moment’.
“When you are not playing it is hard, you just have to keep focused and keep pushing on,” he said. “ Of course the competition makes the team stronger.
“The team is playing well at the moment and there is a lot of choices, so everyone has to play at the top of their game to get in.
“It was good to get on the ball for the reserves the other night and to create stuff for the team and to get on the scoresheet myself. It gets the confidence up and hopefully that can push me on into the first team.”
While Hoilett is fully focused on improving his Premier League fortunes, he is also carefully considering his fortunes when it comes to his international future.
Homeland Canada have already approached him to represent them while Jamaica, his parents’ birth country, are also thought to be interested.
Hoilett could also opt to wait for British citizenship as he bides his time to make sure he makes the right decision.
He said: “I will talk to the family and see what its best for me. It is a big decision because it is a decision for life but hopefully I make the right one.”
