BURNLEY striker Chris Iwelumo says he would play on one leg for the chance to face world champions Spain next week – insisting he has never contemplated making himself unavailable for Scotland despite a niggling hamstring problem.
Iwelumo, who scored twice in Burnley’s 4-0 home win against Hull on Tuesday, has this morning been named in Craig Levein's squad for Scotland's two key Euro 2012 qualifiers next week.
The Scots travel to Prague to face the Czech Republic on October 8 before hosting World Cup winners Spain at Hampden Park four days later.
Iwelumo has been in fine form this season, netting seven goals in 10 games, and made his first international appearance in two years when he appeared as a substitute in a friendly defeat in Sweden in August.
Scotland, though, opted to send him home from the squad for their first two Euro 2012 qualifying matches earlier this month because of a hamstring injury sustained in Burnley’s match at Swansea.
The problem has improved enough for Iwelumo to feature in all of the Clarets’ matches so far in September, but the 32-year-old has admitted he is still hampered by the injury.
While some players might choose to rest an injury during an international break, though, Iwelumo is keen for the chance to play for his country.
“I’ll play on one leg if I have to, that’s what I get paid to do,” said Iwelumo.
“To go out and represent your country, it’s one of the biggest honours you can have.
“But I don’t think it’s up to me. Fingers crossed I’ll be in the squad, and I’ve been playing so I’m looking forward to going and doing what I do.
“It’s not a problem for me to go and join the squad. If I’m in, I’ll be delighted.”
Iwelumo’s first focus, though, is Burnley’s Championship fixture at Millwall on Saturday and he goes into it high on confidence after his brace against Hull.
And the target man is in no doubt that he made the right move when he left Wolves to join the Clarets this summer.
“I knew I’d make the right decision before the season had started,” he said. “It was one of those things where I had a year left at Wolves.
“I had a good chat with Mick McCarthy and I wanted to play more football.
“He couldn’t really promise that, and I needed to go out and get the games and hopefully get the goals, which I’ve started pretty well with.
“The most important thing for us against Hull was getting the win. In the last two league games we had been confident and dominant, but we didn’t really put the points on the board from that.
“It was just good to get the points and I think we deserved the win. It’s a long season and there’s a long, long way to go.
“There will be many ups and many downs and you’ve just got to carry on.
“Let’s see if we can go on a little bit of a run now and start climbing that table.
“All the players here have the same goal, and we’re heading in the right direction.”
