I mentioned the need to resume normal service in my column on Monday and that is exactly what happened last night as the classy Clarets tamed the already rather toothless Tigers.
If Saturday’s result was a disappointment, the performance certainly wasn’t and last night Brian Laws added goals aplenty to their recent impressive approach play to blow Nigel Pearson’s travel sick side completely out of the water.
We have shown enough for me in recent games to say that Laws has been able to turn the tide in terms of the way we play, and this was as comprehensive a victory as the one against Bolton Wanderers a week ago, albeit with more goals.
Since laying the ghost of Owen Coyle to rest, everything about Laws has seemed more relaxed, and that has clearly rubbed off on his players.
The goals aside, this was another display of Total Football crafted not in the lowlands of the Netherlands but in the foothills of the Pennines.
Hungry from the first whistle, tenacious in the tackle and fluid going forward, the Clarets were better than their visitors in every single department.
Two goals each for Iwelumo and Eagles were enough to have Turf Moor bouncing, and a fourth successive clean sheet will do Brian Jensen and his back four the world of good.
Defensive duties aside, it was great to see Tyrone Mears and Danny Fox continue their upturns in form, each of them providing a goal apiece.
But despite some other solid performances, most notably the midfield three of Jack Cork, Dean Marney and Wade Elliott, it is difficult to look past Eagles at the minute.
His work-rate is superb, he finally got the goals his recent performances have deserved, and he looks like he is really enjoying his role as the magician of the side.
The chants of Brian Laws’ Claret and Blue Army are getting louder, and that in itself would have been unimaginable not that long ago.
A trip to Millwall on Saturday will provide a more formidable test. But you wouldn’t bet against the Clarets picking something up.
