BOLTON Wanderers manager Owen Coyle was incensed at referee Mark Clattenburg for failing to spot what he felt was a blatant handball in the build-up to Burnley's winner in the Carling Cup last night.
Coyle felt the ref missed a handball in the build-up from striker Chris Iwelumo before the only goal of the game, a close range volley from Wade Elliott after a scramble in the six-yard box.
“As great a volley as it was from Wade, Chris Iwelumo has clearly punched the ball up in the air,” said Coyle. “It was so obvious – it was like a volleyball punch.
"I spoke to him at half-time because I wanted to be clear he hadn't seen it rather than just chose to ignore it.
“I’ll speak to Martin after the game about it. I knew at the time and I know now after seeing the pictures back.
“But Burnley benefited from that decision and it went their way as it sometimes does in football."
He added: “It was a thrilling game. Burnley started terrific and were really in the ascendancy with the vociferous home support behind but we started to get into the game and created numerous opportunities.
“We created numerous opportunities to score but Burnley had chances as well, I think Chris (Eagles) hit the post early on and Jay Rodriguez did in the second half.”
“It’s disappointing to lose because of the nature of the goal.”
