Missed chances again proved costly, as Blackburn Hawks suffered two narrow defeats over the weekend.

The town team dominated for long spells in both games, but ended up going down 4-2 away to Sheffield Spartans and 3-1 at home to Coventry Blaze.

Despite the defeats, general manager Gary Rogers was encouraged by the displays and believes it is only a mater of time before his team start to turn performances into points.

“We produced two good all-round team performances, but there is a bit of a recurring theme at the moment,” he said.

“We are playing well, but just not converting our chances. Every game we’ve had, it’s been the same story.

“The pleasing thing is, we are creating lots of chances and the players are getting to grips with the new system Jared Owen wants them to play. We just need more confidence in front of goal.

“We’ve had a few players missing, but we are starting to get people back from injury and holidays, so they should make a difference this weekend.”

Hawks found themselves 4-0 down in their opening game of the weekend, before goals from head coach Jared Owen and Sean Day pulled them back into contention late on.

Had the contest continued a little longer, the visitors seemed certain to come away with a point, but they had just let Sheffield get too far ahead.

On Sunday, Hawks again produced another pleasing display, but failed to turn their superior possession and chances into goals.

Aaron Davies opened the scoring for the home side, but Coventry equalised just a few seconds after the first break.

The visitors then took the lead with a rocket shot and in an end-to-end final period, the scoring stayed the same until 40 seconds from full-time, when Hawks pulled their netminder in search of an equaliser and the Blaze bagged an empty net goal to seal the win.
