ACCRINGTON Stanley boss John Coleman believes a greater emphasis on possession football has been the main reason behind the Reds’ strong defensive record in the early stages of the season.

Stanley had an incredible 70 per cent of the possession in their 0-0 draw at high-flying Torquay on Saturday and are still unbeaten in six league games this term after conceding only one goal.

All three of their away games in League Two have been goalless and Coleman thinks Stanley’s style of play this season has been a major factor in their defensive record, together with the summer signing of centre back Sean Hessey.

“I thought we played very well in the first half,” said the Reds manager.

“In the second half I expected more of an onslaught but they didn’t really hurt us.

“What we’re trying to do is keep it tight by keeping the ball. If you’ve got the ball the other team can’t score.

“That’s what we’re trying to drill into the players.

“Sean Hessey has made a big difference too. He’s a good passer of the ball and when you’re passing it out from the back you can retain the ball.

“Since we came into the Football League our goals against has been absolutely pathetic.

"It’s something we’re working hard to try to address and so far it’s happening.”
