BURNLEY suffered their only defeat of the summer in their final pre-season game.

But manager Brian Laws accepted that, while there was still work to do before the new season begins against Nottingham Forest next Saturday, the priority was getting through the game unscathed.

Ross Wallace limped off in the second half, but Laws is hopeful the winger will be fit enough to come into contention for the season opener.

After a goalless first half in which neither goalkeeper was tested, Stoke took the lead through Tuncay with a far post header from Liam Lawrence's right wing cross seven minutes into the second half.

Graham Alexander equalised from the spot on 65 minutes, after substitute Chris Iwelumo was wrestled to the ground by Robert Huth.

Burnley had three earlier penalty appeals ignored by the referee, but Alexander took his opportunity in typically unstoppable fashion against a Stoke side that were proving tough to break down.

Parity lasted less than a minute though as substitute Michael Tonge cut in from the left and fired beyond new goalkeeper Lee Grant on his debut.

The former Sheffield Wednesday stopper, who had replaced Brian Jensen at half-time, was making his first appearance of the summer following shoulder surgery.

Jay Rodriguez came off the bench to fashion two good late chances, but narrowly missed the target with both.
