CHRIS Iwelumo grabbed two late goals to secure a second successive 5-0 win for Burnley in Singapore today and continue their winning pre-season run.
Jay Rodriguez kick-started the rout from the spot before Wade Elliott, Chris Eagles and new striker Iwelumo blazed another goal trail, making it 15 goals in just four friendlies so far for the attack-minded Clarets.
Burnley initially faced a more stern test from Home United, who are unbeaten in their previous seven S League games, winning six of them.
And the conditions proved difficult too at a rain-drenched Tampines Stadium.
But the persistent Clarets overcame the difficulties to earn their fourth consecutive friendly win, and another confidence-boosting clean sheet as they build towards the new campaign.
Manager Brian Laws, who was again without Martin Paterson as he battles to recover from a sore Achilles, also rested Chris McCann after the midfielder suffered a minor knock to his knee in Tuesday’s 5-0 win over Gambok United.
But Burnley picked up where they had left off to demolish ‘the Protectors’.
Rodriguez might have opened the scoring from the spot with just 22 seconds on the clock after meeting Ross Wallace’s cross with a volley that stung the keeper’s hands.
But he was on the spot for the second game in a row to put the tourists in front two minutes later, after Leon Cort’s header from a corner was handled on the line.
Steven Thompson went close to continuing his summer goal-a-game ratio before Elliott cracked in a stunning volley from the edge of the box just after the half-hour, when Wallace’s corner was parried into his path.
Eagles replaced winger Wallace at half time and ran Home ragged with a succession of mazy runs and crosses into the box, reaping the rewards by scoring Burnley’s third with eight minutes to go.
The former Manchester United wide man – a popular figure out in Singapore – benefited from Dean Marney’s determination to win possession just outside the area, and chipped the advancing keeper for his third goal in four friendlies.
Summer signing Marney was influential in the fourth as his corner was met by Andre Bikey’s bullet header.
Home kept it out, but Iwelumo, a half-time replacement for Thompson, was on hand to turn in the loose ball.
The strapping Scot pounced again in the final minute, heading in Eagles’ perfect delivery.
