SOME interesting points raised by ex-Ramsbottom professional Francois du Plessis in yesterday’s Lancashire Telegraph as he waved farewell to the Lancashire League.

And while we all know times are tough, you can’t help but agree with the South African when he talks about the need for clubs to go out and find the best professionals they can.

Yes, it’s easy for du Plessis to say and yes, you can say he is looking after his own interests.

But there is more interest in any competition that features the big name players.

The days have long gone when the Lancashire League in particular could boast the top pros from all around the globe.

But while sides will go out and take a punt on the overseas men the standard of incoming player is naturally higher and more attractive to watch.

Even if you have never heard of some of the professionals when they come over here you can be sure that they are going to be decent.

Shane Warne wasn’t exactly a household name when he was at Accrington – and he went on to have a decent career.

And Michael Clarke and Marcus North are lining up for the Aussies against Pakistan at the moment.

It is difficult for the clubs. The international schedule doesn’t help either.

But clubs who stretch their budget in order to bring in the higher class performer will benefit, not in an immediate financial way.

But they will be stronger for years.
