EVER wanted to have a go at motorsport, but didn’t know how or where to get started?

Then Accrington Motorsports Club could just have the answer.

For the group, in conjunction with other north west motor clubs, have launched a new initiative to encourage new starters in the sport.

Members of the public will get the chance to try a Production Car Autotest at next month’s Cholmondeley Pageant of Power in Cheshire.

Visitors over 18 will, for an entry fee of £25, be able to compete over two laps of a specially laid out grass course in either their own car, or Formula 1000 rally car.

The entry fee will include membership of the club, as well as insurance cover.

“We wanted to prove to the man in the street how much fun you can have at grassroots level,” explained organiser Steve Johnson.

“We’ve joined forces with other clubs, including the Formula 1000 Rally Club, to get this initiative off the ground.

“They were very supportive, and half a dozen members have come forward to loan their cars to the public, so that they can try a rally car for the first time.

“The layout of the autotest will be, in effect, a mini special stage on grass.

“Drivers will be timed against the clock, but it’s all about having fun and encouraging new blood into the sport.

“We are hoping that the whole scheme will prove very popular.

“The Pageant of Power attracts thousands of spectators, and if we get even a small percentage showing an interest, then it’ll be all worthwhile.”

l The Cholmondeley Pagent of Power takes place at Cholmondeley Castle in Cheshire on July 17 and 18.
