IBRAHIM Shah only has to glance across the gym to realise what can be achieved in boxing.

The Blackburn teenager, who has just won the Three Nations title, is a member of Gloves ABC - the club set up by world champion Amir Khan.

And if any aspiring fighter needs an incentive to succeed, then you can’t beat training alongside a world champion.

The Witton Park High School pupil is one of batch of talented young boxers at the Bolton club which first opened its doors in January 2007.

His Three Nations success at the ABA Centre in Sheffield just underlined the potential of the tall 14-year-old.

Alan ‘Mitch’ Mitchell, head coach and gym manager at Gloves has no doubts about Shah’s talents, hinting he could be an Amir Khan in the making.

“He is only young and there is still a long way to go but we believe he is good enough to go all the way,” said Mitch. “He is very talented, very dedicated and an extremely good boxer. He is struggling to find opponents now because everyone fears him.”

The Khan factor has played a major role in Shah’s progress who keeps an eye on the club’s biggest assets.

“When Amir is in the country he comes in to train,” added Mitch. “It is a great incentive for the lads and Amir gives them inspiration. He is very good around them. He not only poses for photos but he helps out when he can and always gives them encouragement.

“He knows all about Ibby and he knows how good he can be.”

For Ibby, it was third time lucky when it came to landing a major prize.

Having twice lost in National Schoolboy finals - the most recent against Simon Baker - Ibby got the perfect revenge when he beat his England team-mate in the Three Nations final.

It was Ibby’s performance in the loss against Baker, which many believed should have been the reverse, which earned him an England call-up and he did not disappoint the England coaches.

“It was a very accomplished display from Ibby,” added Mitch. “Both against Baker who is a very talented boxer and the Welsh lad he beat in the semi finals.”

Mitch believes Ibby now has a big 12 months ahead of him as he steps out of the Schoolboys and into the ABAs.

“This will be a big year for him as he makes the step up to the next stage. But we are confident he can do it.”

Ibby, a talented footballer, cricketer and snooker player, only took up boxing when he was nine-years-old after he was being bullied in school.

“We thought it would be good for him to learn a bit of self defence so he joined Yaqoob Hussain at Audley Boxing Club,” said dad Abdul Shah.

“We are very proud of what Ibby has achieved. Everyone involved at the club says he has the talent to go all the way and that is lovely to hear “But he works incredibly hard so anything he does achieve, he deserves it.”

Yaqoob Hussain, who is also North West regional coach, was present when his protege won his Three Nations title.

He admits he looked on with a mix of frustration and pride.

“I was delighted to see Ibby win but a little bit sad and frustrated that he had to leave out club. We could never compete with Amir Khan and his gym when it comes to providing facilities but I would like to think I have played my part in Ibby’s progress.

“He is a smashing lad and I was one of the first to congratulate him and his family.

“Perhaps one day he may come back and join us.”
