AN Earby teenager from a famous family has reached a cricketing benchmark.

Luke Hipgrave, 13, the son of veteran Applegarth skipper Stephen ‘Herbie’ Hipgrave, was playing for Pendle District U13s in a match against Blackpool U13s when he hit 102 not out.

His dad, who is currently sidelined with an Achilles injury, said it was Luke’s first century and it beat his previous top score of 64.

Luke, a pupil at West Craven High Technology College, Barnoldswick, is an opening batsman for Earby U13s and U15s sides, but his dad said he classed himself as an all-rounder.

Stephen, 49, said Luke had accomplished something he had never done in his long career that also included a spell in the Lancashire League with Colne.

“I’ve never scored 100 at any level and I’ve been playing since I was 13,” he said.

“Luke changes his game to what style of cricket he is playing. I’ve told him the longer you’re out there, the more runs you’ll score.

“You can’t get runs if you’re sat in the pavilion.”
