CLITHEROE ace Mark Young is hoping an England call-up is just around the corner after proving he’s one of the best in the north of the country.
The 28-year-old plus-four golfer was the star turn on Wednesday as Lancashire powered to their second Northern Counties Championship in three years and by an astonishing 30 shots over Roses rivals Yorkshire at Wallasey.
With the Red Rose county crushing their opponents, Young stole the show by coming within one shot of breaking the course record.
Earlier in the week, Young was on course to defend his Lancashire Amateur Championship crown at Hesketh after leading the four-round tournament at the half-way stage.
But the Longridge member stumbled in the final two rounds to finish joint sixth.
Despite that, Young is enjoying a superb run of form and will be hoping to make waves at the 2010 British Amateur Championships at Muirfield, in Scotland, next week.
But most of all, Young is keen to land recognition on the national scene and earn an England cap.
His Lancashire team-mates Tommy Fleetwood, James Robinson and Jack Senior are all involved in the England squad.
“It would be nice to get an England call up,” he said. “That’s what any amateur wants. It’s reaching the top of your game and it’s an ambition of mine.
“I hope the selectors are looking at me. I can’t be far off with the way I’m playing. I don’t know what I have to do other than win a few big events.”
At the Northern Counties Championship, Young took the individual title, closing with a 67 in difficult conditions to add to his opening 69.
A par at the last would have set a course record, but he left a five iron approach short and just failed to get up and down.
