AS one of Lancashire’s few motorsport venues, Weeton Barracks is a popular site for rallying.
But the deteriorating road surface at the Blackpool army camp have led to critical remarks from drivers, and in some cases, a refusal enter any event that uses Weeton.
Now, in preparation for this weekend’s Keith Frecker Memorial Stages, Blackpool South Shore Motor Club have responded to the criticism by coming up with what they claim are the most innovative stage layouts ever devised.
“We’ve always tried to use only the best of the roads, but in the past one of the main runways, which isn’t the best of roads, has always featured prominently,” explained clerk of the course Adrian Atkinson.
“Comments made by competitors after February’s Legend Fires North West Stages forced us to have a radical re-think and I’m confident we’ve found an answer to the problem.”
Conditions should suit the MG Metro DAM 6R4 of Rishton brothers Dale and Wayne Thomas who make only their second appearance the car they debuted at Three Sisters last month.
Clitheroe and District Motor Club members David Sunderland and John Marsh are also in action, competing in a Ford Escort Mk1 RS1600. Late entries will be accepted up until the eve of the rally but interested parties should contact Richard Banks on 01253 743783 or 01253 790890 in the first instance.
Marshals are also required and volunteers should contact Nig20juls@aol.com or phone 07919 694903.
