Close to 100 40-plus-year-old cyclists will be descending on Ribble Valley roads on Sunday for the League of Veteran Racing Cyclists Percy Stallard Memorial counting event to be held on the Bashall Eaves circuit just west of Clitheroe.

Organiser Mal Gill, of Blackburn, has some interesting names on the race program with entries coming from riders who were top performers in their younger years and can still impress now.

There is also a strong local contingent in the event that will take in five laps of the 11-mile circuit for those between 40 and 60 and four laps for the over 60s.

The start is at 10am one-mile east of Higher Hodder Bridge and the event HQ is at Edisford School in Clitheroe.

At the top level of British road racing, Barnoldswick’s Ian Wilkinson has done his sponsor Endura proud recently with two third places at Portsmouth and Exeter in the televised Tour Series and a fifth in the Premier Ryedale Grand Prix at the weekend.

The Rossendale Road Club annual running of their Festival of Britain Trophy time trial was won by Blackburn and District CTC’s Ian Stott with a course record for two laps of the Bolton-by-Bowland circuit of 53minutes 16 seconds.

His team-mate Carl Helliwell took second in 54-57 and Rossendale’s Paul Warrener third in 55-13.

The Pendle Forest 10 mile had Warrener in top slot with a 22m 41s ride followed by two PF members Craig Holden (23-33) and Ian Duckworth (24-48) with Rossendale’s Julian Monk 4th in 25-08. At Clitheroe Warrener was also fastest in the North Lancs Road Club ‘10’ in 23-58 with the tandem of James Prossor and Gill Craske second best in 24-46 and David Tomlinson third (25-19) and Gary Sedgwick fourth (25-48).

The second round of the 2-up Series, held fortnightly on the A6 Barton course, was won by the pairing of Burnley’s Jimmy Wright and Walton-le-Dale’s Paul Fleming in 20m 16s just seven seconds faster than the 20-23 of Pendle Forest’s Jason Bateman and Simon Philips. Carl Helliwell and Ian Stott of Blackburn CTC were also inside 21 minutes with 20-41 for fifth.

Next Wednesday, Stott turns organiser to promote the Blackburn and District CTC annual sporting courses time trial around one lap of the Bashall circuit.

Start time is 7pm.
