DEADLY Darwen rocked Northern League leaders Leyland to make it two wins from two in the Latham Baxendale Twenty20 tournament on Friday night.

As a big crowd turned out at Birch Hall, Darwen skipper John Cordingley top scored with 37 as his side reached a testing 127-7 from their 20 overs.

Those numbers were boosted by guests at a wedding reception and they witnessed professional Mohammad Zaman Khan clattering a rapid 25 but Darwen collapsed from 83-1 to 96-6.

Chris Clarke’s 25 not out added to Cordingley’s runs to post a decent target.

And that total must have seemed like a million miles away to Leyland when they were reduced to 18-3 by the bowling double act of Kamran Anwar and Neil Cordingley.

And when Mike Douglas caught the impressive Luis Reece for 30 as the batsman unwisely attempted a reverse sweep off Clarke, Leyland’s hopes were disappearing.

In the end they were all out for 82 with Niall Burke being the most successful bowler with figures of 3-26.

That made it two wins from two in the competition for Darwen, who had an open date in the League on Saturday.
