Blackburn Rovers boss' Mark Hughes is hoping Sergio Peter will be ready to compete for a regular starting place next season after the young German has forced his way into the first team picture over the last six months.

The 19-year-old winger has made a big impression on Hughes and his coaching staff since he forced his way into the senior squad during the course of last season.

Now the Rovers chief wants his young protege to build on those performances by pushing Morten Gamst Pedersen for a place in his starting line-up next term.

"We're pleased with the progress Sergio has made this year," said Hughes.

"He's able to retain possession and he's got a real belief and confidence in his ability, which has shown in his performances.

"He's got a good future ahead of him. I'm sure he'll benefit next season from the games and the impact he's had this year, and he'll be stronger as well.

"Everyone must try and strive to get into the first team now.

"When you're out of the side you know you have to work extremely hard to get back in.

"And if you're in the side, you know you have to play very well to get back in.

"That's the environment we've created here."
