DISGRACED former Accrington Stanley mascot, Alan Smith, has come under fire for selling his Stan the Monkey suit on an internet auction site.
Smith, 51, who was given a six month jail sentence for indecently assaulting a 14-year-old girl last year, put the costume on e-Bay on Monday.
The starting price is £20. Smith lost his job as the club's mascot because of the offence, although it was not connected to the role. The club replaced Stan the Monkey with Fraser the Eagle.
His decision to sell the costume has caused a stir among Stanley supporters who have been discussing it on the club's website.
One fan said: "It's hardly appropriate to flog the suit after what the former mascot is now slightly famed for."
The club hopes to persuade Smith, of Carter Street, Accrington, to remove it from the site.
Chief executive Rob Heys said: "We will explain that it is not in the best interests of the club ."
Smith said: "It is my property and I just want to get rid of it."
Smith, who was jailed for six months last August but walked free because he had already served his time on remand, had agreed to stay away from matches on his release.
In January, club bosses admitted allowing him back into the ground.
