STEVE Jagielka is hoping to make a speedy recovery from knee surgery in time to secure a new deal in Accrington Stanley's promotion run-in.

The Reds midfielder, who went under the knife on Friday to clear up a cartilage problem, is out of contract in the summer.

And with only 15 Conference games to go, he is aiming to be fit for at least the final eight of the season to help Stanley achieve a dream return to the Football League.

"The operation went well and my knee feels the best it has done for ages," he said.

"I've been told my knee's in good condition, it's just a bit of the cartilage that got damaged in a bad tackle.

"I'm not going to rush back and risk breaking down again. I want to make sure I'm right.

"But I'm sick of the sight of the gym now so I can't wait to get back in training and back in contention."

And Jagielka, who signed from Shrewsbury in July 2004, is keen to secure an extension at the Interlink Express Stadium.

"I'm aiming to come back and play my part in the last few games, but I'm also want to try to get another contract," said Jagielka.

"I guess anyone whose deals need sorting out might have to wait until we know what's happening with regard to promotion.

"But I'm keen to stay, especially if that means the club returning to the Football League because that's where I've played most of my football.

"We've just got to keep going as we are and hopefully teams around us will start beating each other."
