Michael Ricketts is convinced Steve Cotterill can help him rediscover the form that earned him a £3.5million move to the Premiership three years ago.
The former Middlesbrough striker, on loan from Leeds United, scored on his home debut to seal Burnley's victory against Argyle.
Ricketts, 27, said: "I wanted to come here and play regular football after a long time waiting in the wings at Leeds but I have to earn the right to play.
"I know I need to train hard to get in the starting eleven, but I feel Steve Cotterill can help me.
"He is a very demanding manager but that is probably what I need at this moment in my career "I need someone to tell me things as they are and I respect that.
"I know I am not as fit as I can be and that is a big challenge for me.
"When you have been three years not playing, after playing regularly at high standard, it takes a lot to get back in shape.
"Obviously I got the goal and that is a good start, but it was more important to get the three points for the club."
