FA Youth Cup Fifth Round, Burnley 0 Liverpool 3: Battling Burnley bowed out of the FA Youth Cup following a second half wonder show from Liverpool winger Paul Anderson.
A decade on from the tie that saw fresh-faced Michael Owen bag a hat-trick, jet-heeled Anderson took Turf Moor by storm to set up all three goals and delight Reds' youth team coach Steve Heighway, himself a former winger.
However, opposite number Terry Pashley was left to rue a missed opportunity to impress as the Clarets, conquerors of Academy side Fulham in round three, fell to only their second defeat in 22 games.
Pashley said: "We knew it was going to be tough but I am disappointed in the manner of the defeat because I feel we didn't give a true account of ourselves.
"I looked at the stand and it was nearly full and in the end, we've gone out with a whimper after all we have achieved this season."
He added: "These are the games where we are out there on the big stage.
"I don't think we had a meaningful shot for an hour, so it's just a shame that we passed up the opportunity."
Liverpool, who knocked out Youth Cup holders Ipswich Town in the previous round had their first real spell of pressure and finally created the first real opening in the 23rd minute, only for Jack Overson to throw himself bravely in the way of Michael Nardiello's fierce shot.
That typified the manner in which Burnley continually snapped away at the Academy side before the break.
But the Merseysiders showed their class to draw first blood in the 57th minute with a deadly counter attack.
Anderson's blistering pace took him clear of the Clarets defence and his inviting delivery whipped across the six-yard box was hammered into the gaping goal by Nardiello.
The goal finally sparked Burnley into their best spell of the game and just past the hour mark, second half substitute Ali Akbar cleverly cut back inside onto his left foot to force a routine save from David Roberts in the Reds' goal.
But two more moments of magic from Anderson, a £350,000 signing from Hull City, finally tipped the tie the way of the Premiership side inside the final 12 minutes.
First the livewire winger caused more chaos with a low cross that saw Craig Lindfield get lucky when his weak shot was deflected home by unfortunate Clarets skipper Nicky Platt.
And seconds later, a deep, hanging cross from Anderson again found substitute Lindfield, who bulleted a header past Mann from eight yards to seal the victory.
BURNLEY: Matthew Mann, Rob Henry, Paul Casey (Alex McDonald 74), Connor Smith, Jack Overson, Tom Blackler, Jay Rodriguez (Ali Akbar 46), Nicky Platt, Cayne Hanley, Rob Turner, Adam Kay (Dale Underwood 78). Subs not used: Dean Stott, Michael Donlon.
