Padiham more than matched leaders Newcastle Town for large chunks of the game at the Lyme Valley Parkway Stadium but eventually went down 2-0 after conceding goals in added time at the end of both halves.
It could have been different if Stuart Telfer had put away a chance in the first minute when through on goal.
Town had chances but never threatened until deep into added time when Jordan Johnstone got free at the back post to score from close range.
Padiham looked dangerous after the break when Anthony Taylor replaced Brian Walsh and began to cause problems on the left.
But Newcastle got a second goal two minutes into added time when Neville Thompson bundled in a cross.
