SHEFFIELD Wednesday have denied claims they have received a bid from Burnley for Marcus Tudgay.

It was reported over the weekend that the Clarets had tabled a £1.75million offer for striker Tudgay, who has agreed a new three-year deal with the Owls which is ready to sign when the players return for pre-season training.

But I understand the fee mentioned was in a conversation between club chiefs and not an official approach.

“Burnley have made an enquiry, but they are enquiring about a lot of players,” confirmed Wednesday boss Brian Laws, who is determined to outline his Championship ambitions by keeping hold of the 26-year-old, who finished last season as the Owls’ top scorer with 14 - four against the Clarets.

“We are building a team around Marcus - he’s not for sale. He’s not been put up for sale.

“The figures that are being bandied about are nowhere near what we would accept in any case.”

A club statement added: “Sheffield Wednesday can confirm that the club has not received a formal offer from Burnley for the services of Marcus Tudgay, contrary to recent media reports.

“As a club, Sheffield Wednesday wants to build a competitive squad around players like Marcus Tudgay, with the aim of reaching the Premier League together.

“Further, Marcus recently agreed a new three-year contract with Sheffield Wednesday, which he is due to sign when the players return later this week, indicating his commitment to the club."
