GRAHAM Alexander will be the oldest outfield player in the Premier League next season after putting pen to paper on a new one-year deal to stay with Burnley.

The Clarets hero, who started every game last season as Burnley surged into the top flight of English football via the play-offs for the first time in 33 years, turns 38 in October.

But despite his advancing years Turf Moor chiefs have moved quickly to secure the versatile veteran for another 12 months as they plot to take on the likes of Liverpool, Manchester United and Blackburn Rovers on a level footing.

The news is certain to delight Burnley fans as the excitement ahead of the new season reaches fever pitch – and that excitement is certain to build as the players return to pre-season training this week.

Alexander, who achieved cult status during an eight-year stay with Lancashire rivals Preston North End until his cross county switch two years ago, will be the elder outfield statesman of the top flight following the Ewood Park departure of Tugay.

Since he arrived in East Lancashire, Alexander has made 89 appearances for the Clarets and scored the winning goal against Reading in the first leg of the play-off semi-final last month.

The Scottish international has always stated how happy he is at Turf Moor and, prior to penning the new deal, admitted he is a big fan of boss Owen Coyle.

“He is a fair gaffer,” said Alexander.

“He will have a go at you if he thinks your work rate or effort isn’t great.

“But if you make a mistake by getting on the ball, passing and playing football then he won’t.”
